The Michael Sobey Memorial Movember Lunch

The Late Michael Sobey was born and bred on the Sunshine Coast and returned to Noosa with his wife and their first born son, Nicholas in 1997. In 2001, Michael became a partner of the firm.

Michael immersed himself in the local community. He was president and vice president of the Tewantin-Noosa Cricket Club for 8 years, a committee member of the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association for many years, a member of the St Thomas More school board and director of Coast2Bay Housing Group Ltd, a not-for-profit company dedicated to obtaining affordable housing solutions across the Sunshine Coast and Moreton regions.

Michael was also a strong supporter of the Movember movement, raising just over $60,000 in 14 years. His fundraising efforts began with family and friends, growing to hosting successful long lunches on Hastings Street. Sadly, at the age of 48, Michael was diagnosed with bowel cancer. After a two and a half year battle, Michael passed away in February 2022, aged 50.

In an effort to continue Michael’s legacy and to shine a light on bowel cancer awareness, the firm launched the ‘Michael Sobey Memorial Movember Lunch’ in 2022. The day was a huge success, raising $35,559 for the Movember Foundation and $18,148 for Bowel Cancer Australia.

This luncheon will be held annually to drum up awareness that people do get a diagnosis under the age of 50, and that just because the recommended testing age is 50, it’s not something you should avoid or just wait for the test to arrive.
